Our Yarns

As we produce a number of products for a variety of uses, we buy different yarns from different sources.

The process we go through to bring raw wool to a handspun yarn is explained in Spinning. Our sources for raw wool are explained in Sheep and Wool.

The majority of our blanket-weight wool comes from a longstanding American wool mill, J.&H. Clasgens Company.</A>. Our blanket weight wool is a 4-ply woolen yarn. We have another mill supplying our undyed black wool in blanket weight. We buy natural, undyed wools to dye with natural dyes (see Dyeing), and also buy commercial dyed wools, especially for clothes. Most of our rug weight wool comes from the second mill mentioned above. It is custom spun to our specifications. We have designed it to be a very hard wearing, durable, yarn. We call it a "cabled" yarn. It is a plied rug yarn that is then plied again to achieve the thickness required. Much of this cabled yarn is hand dyed with commercial (acid) dyes for use in
